About Pompano Beach High
We're an independent, student-led newsroom chronicling the people, performances, and daily life inside Pompano Beach High School — and the wider community that surrounds it.
A newsroom built by students, rooted in our neighborhood.
Pompano Beach High was founded in 1928, and for nearly a century its corridors have carried the rhythm of a coastal Florida community — a place where the Atlantic meets the mangroves, where the band practices on the seawall, and where the next generation keeps showing up with something to say.
Our editorial team launched in 2019 to make sure those voices actually get heard. What started as a single journalism elective covering Friday-night football has grown into a multi-desk newsroom publishing daily, with reporters, photographers, and opinion writers covering campus, city hall, the arts, athletics, and the small local stories that rarely make the front page of regional papers.
We believe local journalism is the connective tissue of a community. When a school board meeting goes uncovered, an important vote happens in silence. When a senior's capstone exhibition is never written about, the work disappears. We exist to keep the record honest, the coverage consistent, and the microphone pointed in every direction.

What guides every story we publish.
Our editorial standards aren't a wall poster. They're reviewed every semester by the staff and applied to every desk — news, features, opinion, sports, and arts. Three principles shape the work.
Independence first
No story is killed or shaped because it's inconvenient for the school, a coach, a sponsor, or an advertiser. Our editorial firewall is real — not theoretical. We disclose funding sources and conflicts transparently with every article.
Verification over speed
We'll be late and right before we're early and wrong. Every named source is confirmed, every quote is heard back, every fact is checked against a second document. Corrections are published prominently — not buried in a footer.
Coverage for everyone
From varsity athletics to the chess club's first regional title. From the bilingual families on NE 23rd to the AP Physics lab. If it shapes a student's life here, it deserves a reporter on it. Equity in coverage is a structural commitment, not a tagline.
Listen before we write
We host quarterly open editorial meetings in the cafeteria. Anyone — student, teacher, parent, neighbor — can walk in and pitch, critique, or push back. More than forty community-sourced stories have come out of those sessions since 2021.

From the breezeway to the boardroom.
Our coverage area starts at the front gate of Pompano Beach High and expands outward in concentric rings — onto the surrounding streets, into the city's civic institutions, and across the wider Broward education landscape.
We work with, not above.
Our reporting is stronger because of long-standing relationships with these groups. They provide training, mentorship, archives, and source networks — and we provide consistent, accountable coverage of the issues they care about.
Adults in the room.
Our editorial decisions are made by students, but a small group of faculty advisers and professional mentors keep the standards high and the legal guardrails in place. They review but do not direct.
Dr. Marisol Castro
Twenty years in print journalism before teaching. Oversees our news desk's fact-checking workflow and pre-publication legal review.
Devon Rambert
Documentary filmmaker and PBHS alum (Class of 2008). Runs our summer photo workshop and edits long-form photo essays.
Aisha Knowles
Attorney and former debate coach. Helps opinion writers frame arguments, cite precedent, and avoid defamation without softening their voice.
Jorge Talavera
Bilingual editor coordinating our Spanish-language coverage of the Eastside and Collier City neighborhoods. Reads every translation twice.
