An Art Educator teaches art from historical, critical and studio perspectives. In most cases the art educator is a practicing artist him/herself. Most art educators were artists first and have expertise in specific mediums and styles according to their interests. However, it is essential that an art educator build upon his existing skills to include the use of a variety of media, styles and techniques for art making.  The art educator must have knowledge of art from societies around the globe and the historical evolution of art in the world. They must also understand the aesthetic qualities (what is the value and nature of art) of art to be able to describe, interpret, analyze and evaluate artwork in order to impart understanding and skills for the art student's art production. Seeing art work in its wholeness with the ability to break it down into detailed parts is a must if the Art Educator is to be a successful teacher of art.

For this project, the Artist/Educator will create the art work themselves to gain an experiential knowledge of the specific art craft assigned. In this way, they will be better equipped to teach the class how to make the art craft.  In addition, the Artist/Educator will be alerted to problems students may encounter when creating the art craft through his own experience in the creative process.

  1. Take notes from the resource websites given for your assigned art craft.
  2. Scan and print or Xerox the appropriate section of the *manual/s giving step by step instruction for creating the art craft. These must be checked out from Ms. Zolna.
  3. Compile a list of materials you will need for the students to make the art craft and give to Ms. Zolna. *Note: some materials can be substituted for availability or to improve the quality of that presented in the manuals.
  4. From your notes from the websites and art making manuals, make the art craft.
  5. Fill in the Art Educator Outline in preparation for teaching
  6. Teach the art craft after the Power Point presentation (if helpful, have the Graphic Artist include step by step or other instructional slides to help you teach students how to create the art craft)

*manuals referred to above are: Brown Bag Ideas from Many Cultures, by Irene Tejada, Davis Pub., Inc and Art from Many Hands, by Jo Miles Schuman, Davis Pub., Inc.
