Art Historians are concerned with gathering information about works of art and the artists who created them.  Historians provide us with dates and other biographical and social information about art. Art historians view artworks as visual documents reflecting the ideas, values, fears, beliefs, superstitions and desires that  have characterized every society in every era from prehistoric times to the present. Art historians build there explanation of art works through 4 operations: description, analysis, interpretation and judgment.  During their examinations they try to find answers to questions such as these:

bullet

When, where and why was the art work created?

bullet

What style of art does it represent?

bullet

What artists, works of art or other influences inspired the artist?

bullet

What impact did the artist or the artwork have on the history of art?

For this project, the Art Historian will develop a paper through the 4 operations mentioned above with an emphasis on answering the questions, when, where and why the art work was created, and what influences from the society and environment of the art work's origin inspired it's conception. The specific tasks of the Art Historian are:

  1. Take notes from the resource websites given for your assigned art craft.
  2. Read Chapter 5 of Art in Focus and use Lesson 2, pages 116 through 119 as a guide.
