Ninth graders bring fresh spirit
By Emily Solley, Staff Intern
The freshman class has already begun to make its mark.
“
The freshmen this year have spirit, and… it’s weird,” admitted
junior Luciana Vergara. “They get annoying with it. I don’t
like it. The seniors go all out, but the freshmen this year have more spirit
than
usual.”
According to freshman Megan Mead, the school’s high expectations influenced
her participation in Spirit Week. She even has a bookmark bearing the school’s
mascot between the pages of her book.
Gunner Mendrisky, freshman, has a different reasoning.
“
I want to surprise everyone. That makes it fun. This is a good school. It’ll
get you to a good college,” said Mendrisky.
Janesha Mohorn, who ran for vice-president of
the freshman class, said, “Everyone
should have school spirit. Some of us from Pompano Middle decided
to hype things up. We wanted to give them some feedback. This year, freshman
are the best.”
Sebastian Hemmerling admitted to wearing black and screaming at
the pep rallies.
“
I have school spirit because that’s what we do. That’s what the
Class of 2015 does,” said Hemmerling.
Not all freshmen are so “fired up,” according
to Destinee Santiago.
“
I like the school and have it on Facebook and all, but I don’t paint
my face or anything like that,” said Santiago. “I did really want
to wear black at the pep rally. I would have if I had found a black shirt.
My whole family’s gone here, so we’re like
a family of Pompano.”
Many freshmen are glad about having Fridays off.
According to some freshmen, who requested to remain anonymous,
the class war points are unfair.
“
If it was fairly judged, we’d win sometimes,” stated
a ninth grader who preferred not to be named.
Senior Anthony Anastasi thinks otherwise. “
Some of them don’t even look tall enough to be in middle school. It’s
like, the elementary school is right there,” said
Anastasi.
Freshmen remain in last place in class war points.
